Sad demise of Maggi

Maggi has become synonymous with noodles, like Xerox for photocopy or Dalda for vanaspati! I dont know how many people would have this yellow packet listed as their comfort food. It has to be Nestle's most popular product in India.

Alas, after being the most popular instant food in India for 33 years, it has gone! Disappeared. The lead content is very high in Maggi according to FSSAI. It must be so if the same has been reported by various labs across India.

We have been having Maggi for years and nothing untoward has happened due to it. At least nothing has been reported or co-related. And I am sure there are so many other foods which must not be meeting the permissible limits, but are being sold widely.

Corruption is very rampant in India and this is not something no one knows. I have a feeling that something, somewhere did not go well, someone was not happy. This has to be related to bureaucracy as well. However, this disgruntled person/s must have very high reach to get a nation wide, indefinite ban on this product.

One incident which comes to my mind, occurred soon after the reports of high lead content came in the tabloids. Conversation between me and shopkeeper, whom we know since last 15 years.

Me: Uncle, yeh sab Maggi packets ab wapas lene wale aisa bol rahe paper mein

Shopkeeper: Arre kuch nahi hota.

Me: Nahi Nahi, Recall karwa rahe sab Maggi

Shopkeeper: 1 -2 din natak chalega, phir sab bikega. Kaunsi cheez acchi hai, Cola kharab hai aaya hai...kuch ban  nahi hua. Chocolate mein keede nikle the...woh bhi bik raha...

Me: Haan woh toh hai

(Yes, I am from Bombay and this is Bambaiya Hindi)

So, the pesticides found in  Cola and insects found in Chocolate also didn't last very long. They are back on the racks and filling up tummies. Colas...really I find disturbing...empty calories..absolutely nothing in it but fizz and they ban Maggi :-(

The Maggi ban has lasted more than 2 months now and still counting. To say Nestle has suffered HUGE losses, is an understatement.

I had couple of packets which were bought before the ban and I could enjoy it. Thank God for that. I was craving Maggi yesterday and went and got the only alternative available - SunFeast Yippee noodles.....

................I want Maggi :-(
