BabyChakra & Johnson's Event for Mommies
For years Johnson and Johnson has been synonymous with baby care products. So much so that the scent of the J&J baby talcum powder was associated with baby scent. With time, new products entered the market and various news of J&J products not being safe came up.
I got a chance to attend a Moms Meet in Pune, organised by BabyChakra, in association with Johnson's. It was such a fun event and lovely meeting so many mothers, some with their babies in tow. So many moms do not get a chance to go out, meet friends and catch up. This was such a lovely opportunity of spending half a day together.
The event was hosted by Deepali, who happens to be the Marketing Manager at Johnson's baby. A small presentation talked about different aspects of baby care and the products.
- Is Mineral Oil Better than Natural Oil - Mineral oil is safer or preferable as the base oil for babies. It being mild, fortified and having low viscosity as well. It also prevents water loss from the skin making it a better moisturizer. This makes it better option for massage.
- Baby Skin - How it is different from Adult skin, how a milder soap or body wash is required for their skins. They also informed how the pH is not the same all over the body for the baby and it keeps changing as well.
After this informative presentation, the mothers were divided into groups as per the tables and we had so much fun! We were made to do activities using Johnson's products and the team with fastest results won the round.
Activity 1 - We were given a packet each of baby wipes - one from Johnson's and the other from some other brand which was concealed. We were given a test tube and a syringe. We were asked to take 1 wipe, put it in the syringe and press hard and collect the moisture in the test tube.
Then we discussed the results, how the moisture content in J&J wipes was higher, the content in the wipes and how they are gentler on baby skin.
Activity 2 - This kit had a bottle of Johnson's Top to Toe body wash, a bottle of Hard water and pH strips.
We were to measure the pH of hard water first, then add the body wash and measure the pH again. Surprisingly, the Top to Toe wash actually changed the pH of hard water, making into soft water!! This was very very interesting to know.
Activity 3 - A new product was launched - Johnson's baby laundry detergent. And this kit contained a piece of white cloth, a sample of the detergent, 4 types of stains in bottles - ketchup, soya sauce, blue water colour and chocolate.
We were to stain the cloth using any 3 stains and then wash using the detergent. The stains went off and the detergent was very mild as well. The pleasant fragrance was a added bonus.
This was followed by a Q& A session, where Deepali patiently answered all the questions put forth by the mommies, and trust me, there were many.
Case against Johnson's - Many wanted to have more information on the legal issues surrounding the products and how they had lost a case. We came to know that they planned to challenge the verdict and had in fact won 3 similar cases in their favour
Questions about Talcum powder - The particle size of talc was discussed. The edges are smooth and the size is bigger than skin pore size. Also, something that is not discussed usually, is the correct method of applying talcum powder on the baby. A powder puff is NOT recommended, or even directly sprinkling on the baby's body. This is to avoid the powder from entering the airway.
Cost of products - We discussed how the products are relatively cheaper as compared to other products, especially International products. We discussed how their mantra is "Safety" and using products which are safe for the baby - whether natural or artificial.
